Learning your way

When I started at UC, I was eager to experience Learning your way as the school had intimated.  As I continue to study, I realize that this phrase can have different meanings depending on the angle it is viewed from. The three perspectives that this phrase can be interpreted are by either putting emphasis on learning, your or way, depending on the circumstances.

From the first perspective, if the emphasis is on learning the phrase may be construed to mean that learning is the most important activity in the phrase. As such, the university administration, in my opinion, would be more inclined to taking this perspective. This is because their core business is to provide the facilities and right atmosphere for learning. They would therefore be interested in the aspect of learning more than anything else.

Secondly, an emphasis on your would be more relevant to the student, since he or she is more concerned about his or her own affairs in terms of academics. As a student, I am more inclined to consider your as the most important word in the phrase. This is because students should have their own way of studying according to the preference of each different student. Every student is entitled to studying any way he or she can benefit the most, and we are all different and deserve the opportunity to explore our unique traits for the ultimate realization of our different potentials.

On the other hand, placing emphasis on the word way may be identified with more by the professors or university lecturers. For a university professor, this word may be the most outstanding because as a provider of knowledge, he or she is involved in teaching students how to solve problems and how to find solutions. Subsequently, the professor may feel that it is his or her duty to tell students how to find the way to solving problems and finding solutions. This is particularly relevant if the professors view is that students should be taught how to arrive at solutions instead of just knowing the solution.

As a complete phrase, however, and considering the above possible interpretations, this phrase may be understood to mean that all the activities at the university, including but not restricted top learning, can be done the way that suits the particular actor. For instance, the student can study and learn by his or her desired method, style, time or way. The professors and lecturers on the other hand can ply their trade the way they best know how, and administrators, staff and the other organs of the university can also engage in their business by applying the methods and practices they believe are most appropriate for learning, their core business. In this case, if every actor feels generally contented and satisfied that he or she is doing things the way he or she would like, then the university will have delivered on its promise of leaning your way.

Therefore, if at all there may be something to be done to improve on the promise the university may have to make it even more possible for everyone to perform his or her duties with complete freedom from undue interference, as long as it is in line with the university rules, regulations and general practices.  For example students can study anytime they want within the campus premises, professors are free to apply any method of teaching that they choose, and administrators may introduce courses and curriculums they consider relevant to the job market according to their wisdom.

In summary, the phrase learning your way may be construed to mean that the university is allowing everyone to explore his or her unique personal capabilities and achieve his or her full potential while studying at UC.
